As one of the founders of Interviewstreet, I’m excited and humbled that our company has grown to 1,000+ customers all over the globe. I’m looking forward to a bright, busy future building our platform into the first choice for technical recruiting everywhere.
We launched the product in 2011 because we (the founders) faced the issue of hiring quality programmers ourselves. However, ideas & products evolve and so do we. While Interviewstreet helps you in streamlining your hiring process and saving tons of time, there’s almost always the problem of getting more of the right candidates interested in your company. We have heard from every customer that job sites and ads only go so far. In essence, what would it take to build a large community of programmers who love solving problems in your niche, with some of them potentially interested in working at your company? Sounds fantastic, right?
That’s why we launched HackerRank.com in Oct 2012 at TechCrunch Disrupt. Our mission is to build the largest community of programmers in different domains of Computer Science – Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Functional Programming, etc. who love to solve interesting problems, some for fun, some for cash prizes or rank on the leaderboard, and some for jobs. We have grown into a strong community of more than 150K programmers, and some of our customers have successfully launched contests (see examples from Quora, Prezi and Twitter).
While we grew both efforts in parallel we faced an issue of confusion over the brands amongst customers, investors, and even within our own team. This slowed down the pace of development and growth, so we decided to make a call. With the goal in mind of a single brand that resonates with our vision and works well in the long term, we have decided to unite the products under the HackerRank name. The product currently named Interviewstreet will be renamed HackerRankX.
Nothing is going to change for Interviewstreet users – it’s the same interface, same process but with a rebrand! HackerRankX will be supported by the Interviewstreet team, at the same price, but of course we’ll continue to improve (one example: here’s the different candidate experience in the old interface versus new interface).
HackerRankX offers the Interviewstreet platform to help screen candidates and conduct phone interviews with analytics and insights on top of that… plus the opportunity to host competitive programming contests. We also offer white-labeled solutions for your challenges, and if it’s your preference to keep the Interviewstreet name, e.g. your-company-name.interviewstreet.com, it can point to your challenges.
Paul Graham, arguably one of the most qualified to speak on the topic, says: “‘Hacker’ connotes mastery in the most literal sense: someone who can make a computer do what he or she wants.” Every programmer wants to become a hacker, and every innovative company is strategizing to hire top technical talent. Hence, we believe this name will age well in the long-term.
